Frequently Asked Questions:

Question:  What is a Jackapoo?

Answer:  A Jackapoo is a Poodle crossed with a Jack Russell Terrier (or a Parson Russell Terrier or a Russell Terrier).  For a full explanation see the ABOUT JACKAPOOS section of our website.

Question:  Do your require a puppy application?

Answer:  We do NOT ask our Clients to fill out an application.  We realize that acquiring a puppy from us is approximately a 12 to 15 year (or more) commitment and we trust them to take their commitment seriously.  If at any time a Client finds that they can longer care for their dog, we are here to help them re-home the dog ASAP.  Since our breeding program began in 2006 we have only had to re-home 4 dogs!   Though we do NOT require an application, we do ask that any potential Client read our entire website.  There is much valuable information there and the answers to many potential questions..

Question:  What is the Price of your puppies and how do I RESERVE one?

Answer:   Please see the PRICE/DEPOSIT section of our website

Question:  How do I get my puppy if I live far from StarView JackaPoos?

Answer:  Please see the SHIPPING section of our website.

Question:  Do you always have a Waiting List?

Answer:  We almost always have at least 4 to 5 people on our Waiting List.  On occasion we may have a puppy available to someone not on the Waiting List since those who are on the List have the option to pass on any litter, and wait for the next.  Some Clients are looking for a specific color (or gender) and are willing to wait as long as needed, to get it.

When people contact us wanting a puppy,  I always suggest that they do research on Jackapoos and Jackapoos breeders.  If they decide that they want a puppy from us, then it is best to pay the DEPOSIT (non refundable except under extreme circumstances) and get on the Waiting List.  If they are patient, they will get a puppy.  For those who want a Jackiepoo, new Poodle mix that we started in 2017, we are the only source for these adorable dogs!  Please see the WHAT IS A JACKIEPOO? section of our website for more information.

Question:  What is the difference between a Jackapoo and a Jackiepoo?

Answer:  A Jackapoo is a Poodle crossed with a Jack Russell Terrier or a Parson Russell Terrier or a Russell Terrier.  A Jackiepoo is a blending of the following breeds:  Poodle, Parson Russell Terrier (or Jack Russell Terrier or Russell Terrier), Chihuahua & American Staffordshire Terrier.  Each of these breed's brings something very good to the blend.  For a full explanation see the WHAT IS A JACKIEPOO? section of our website.

Question:  Why are your puppies raised outside?

Answer:  As a retired nurse and the mother of 5 grown children, I am ALL about the Immune System!  Puppies raised outside are exposed to many organisms in the soil that help to build their immune systems and set them up to be healthier dogs for their entire life.  They are protected from diseases such as Parvo as long as they are nursing.  At 6 weeks of age they are taken to our vet for a health exam and their 1st puppy shot.

The added bonus to raising pups outside is that it becomes a foreign concept to them to relieve themselves indoors when they are used to going potty in grass, dirt, leaves and pine needles---so they are easier to housebreak. One of the downsides of raising pups indoors is that, if they are trained to use potty pads, then every piece of clothing, rug, or any cloth like item on the floor is mistakenly seen as a potty pad to them.

Question:  Isn't it too cold to raise puppies outside?

Answer:  We are located in South Central Kentucky where the winter's are relatively mild.  We purposely do not breed over the winter.  We have on occasion brought an expectant mother dog in the house if the weather is unusually cold and it is close to her due date.  The mother and puppies are moved outside when the weather has warmed sufficiently.

Question:  Wouldn't it be better to adopt a rescue dog from a shelter than to buy a dog from a breeder?

Answer:  We are 100% behind rescuing dogs!  Over the years we have taken in several lost dogs and found homes for many of them.  Our Clients who own more than one dog, often also own a rescue.  Unfortunately, some people are just not in a position to take on the extra care & time many rescues demand.  If you are looking for a dog rather than a puppy please see our page entitled Rescues/Rehomes/Adults.

Question:  Why is it important to buy from an established breeder rather than a pet store or 3rd party?

Answer:  Most established breeders have a code of ethics that they live by.  They are usually great animal lovers and truly care about their dogs rather than just being involved in dog breeding for the money.  The problem with pet stores and 3rd party sellers/brokers, is that the person adopting/buying a puppy from them really has no idea where the puppy came from and under what circumstances it was raised--plus they never get to speak to the person who actually raised the puppy.  "Breeders" who sell via pets stores and 3rd party sellers/brokers come and go quickly and often their mating/breeding decisions are not well thought out.  We here at StarView Farm spend countless hours in research and contemplation before bringing any new animals (horses or dogs) into our program or making a mating/breeding decision.  This philosophy has resulted in our horse breeding program (Arabians by Colangelo at StarView Farm) winning at the National & World Cup level and the exportation of many of our horses internationally, and our dog breeding program (StarView JackaPoos) becoming the Premier Jackapoo Breeding Program in the USA.

Question:  How much do your puppies shed and are they hypoallergenic?

Answer: We dislike the term "non-shedding" since even Poodles shed---but their shedding is best described as VERY low or VERY infrequent!!!  If the fur from a puppy's coat looks and feels more like a Poodle (soft & curly), then it is less likely to shed much.  A puppy whose coat looks and feels more like a Jack Russell Terrier (or Parson Russell Terrier or Russell Terrier), will most likely shed more.  We rate our puppies on what we refer to as the Shedding Scale that ranges from 1 to 10.  On that scale, 1 is VERY LOW shedding and 10 is a HEAVY shedder.  A Poodle is usually a 1 on the scale and most Jack Russell Terriers (or a Parson Russell Terriers or a Russell Terriers) are an 8 to 10.  Most of our puppies fall into the 4 to 6 range with some being lower and some being higher.  But they almost always shed less than a purebred JRT (or Parson or Russell).   Many of our puppies tend to be close to hypoallergenic but, for someone who is HIGHLY allergic to dog dander,  we recommend that you get a puppy from a program who breeds 2 breeds together, that are both known to be very close to hypoallergenic.  This ensures your best chance of getting a dog that you will not have a reaction to.

Question:  Why do you breed only a few puppies/litters per year?

Answer:  We have no more than 3 to 4 females (producing puppies) and 1 to 2 males (at stud) at one time.  Unlike most dog breeders whose females have 2 litters per year, our females only have 1 litter per year.  Obviously, it would be more lucrative for us and more convenient for our clients if we bred more litters per year, but we feel this is best for our mother dog's overall, lifetime health.

Question:  Are your dogs registered?

Answer:  Both of the male Poodles that we use as sire's (daddy's) for our puppies are AKC registered parti-Poodles.  Most of the females that we use are registered (or eligible to be registered) with the Registries affiliated with Jack Russell Terriers, Parson Russell Terriers or Russell Terriers.  Since the resulting puppies are a hybrid cross or mix, we do not register them since we feel that the registries that have popped up for theses dogs are rather pointless.  We do not breed show dogs or dogs that will be bred on.  What we do is to produce the best overall family dog possible, with an emphasis on things that matter to our clients such as intelligence/trainability, sweet, loving/affectionate temperaments and fun personalities with silly antics, like our favorite breed--the Jack Russell Terrier!
